These are actually very common in the Yucatan. In other places they’re called cenotes. I’ve not heard of them opening up like that, but I suppose they have to at some point. There’s a huge one in Southern Mexico that’s very famous for skydiving. It’s at least several hundred feet deep if not deeper.

this sinkhole is a plumbing problem lol. Water main/sewage line was emptying into the soft clay, eroded it easy, made a big soggy patch of ground. Weight of wet clay adds pressure to other layers of clay beneath, compresses it. Water seeps through the pores in the clay deposit, gets even deeper, but when it reaches solid rock the water begins to pool up. Instead of moving through the clay it washes the deposit away bit by bit, until the weight of whats above it forces through in a very precise shape ^^^(awesome hole)^^^ depending on the width of the clay deposit and the circumfrence of the underwater lake.
@Az8908, The first image is, in fact, of a completely different sinkhole than the others on the page. They are both in the same region!! Just look at the buildings around the hole. It’s obvious. Don’t you remember them saying this is the second one? The soil there is made of a mixture of normal soil, soft clay and pummeled volcanic rock which is susceptible to water erosion. This coupled with the leaking water pipes, sewers, storm drains, and naturally occurring underground water flow cause the sink holes. So it’s no coincidence that they both occurred in the same place.
Yes this did happen in Guatemala. Most of my family live there now and unfortunately a 3 story house use to stand there. Also a guard went missing when this happen so it’s been asummed that he fell down the hole.

What it did, there is probably a cavern system underneath the city where this is taken, and they had a monsoonish type rain early before, so it created a giant sinkhole, leading to the cavern. either that, or these photos are faked, my guess is the last

Instead of moving through the clay it washes the deposit away bit by bit, until the weight of whats above it forces through in a very precise shape ^^^(awesome hole)^^^ depending on the width of the clay deposit and the circumfrence of the underwater lake.

@Az8908, The first image is, in fact, of a completely different sinkhole than the others on the page. They are both in the same region!! Just look at the buildings around the hole. It’s obvious. Don’t you remember them saying this is the second one? The soil there is made of a mixture of normal soil, soft clay and pummeled volcanic rock which is susceptible to water erosion. This coupled with the leaking water pipes, sewers, storm drains, and naturally occurring underground water flow cause the sink holes. So it’s no coincidence that they both occurred in the same place.

Yes this did happen in Guatemala. Most of my family live there now and unfortunately a 3 story house use to stand there. Also a guard went missing when this happen so it’s been asummed that he fell down the hole.

Residents of a Guatemala City heard strange rumblings for weeks but weren’t sure what was happening beneath them. Then, in late February 2007, a near-perfect circle of earth dropped some 30 stories almost instantly. It’s amazing how neat the hole is. Two people died and over 1,000 had to be evacuated; the sinkhole resulted from a corroded sewage system deep beneath the surface (apparently the odor coming from the hole was intolerable).
for all you people wondering what it is, its a sinkhole. all that rock under the ground that you see in the pics is limestone which is very quickly eroded by acid rain. so the rain leaked down into the rocks and slowly made this huge hole and then finally the ground above it collapsed

What it did, there is probably a cavern system underneath the city where this is taken, and they had a monsoonish type rain early before, so it created a giant sinkhole, leading to the cavern. either that, or these photos are faked, my guess is the last
